What is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a safe outpatient procedure that divides and closes the vas deferens.

The vas deferens are the tubes that carry sperm. The procedure prevents sperm from entering your semen and being ejaculated, ending your ability to get a woman pregnant.

How should I prepare for a vasectomy?

In general, you should avoid taking any aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen for two weeks before your procedure. Make sure to tell Dr. Durrani about any medications, vitamins, or supplements that you take daily.

While most patients don’t require anesthesia, some do have a sedative during their vasectomy. Dr. Durrani answers your questions during your consultation and provides personalized instructions on eating and drinking before your vasectomy. A friend or family member should drive you home.

What happens during a vasectomy?

Dr. Durrani performs a vasectomy in approximately 20 minutes. 

You undress and lie down on the treatment table. Dr. Durrani thoroughly numbs your scrotum and, if necessary, can provide medicine to help you relax. 

Dr. Durrani uses a special surgical tool to access your vas deferens. He carefully severs the tube and seals each of the ends. With a no-scalpel vasectomy, you don’t even need stitches. 

What should I expect after a vasectomy?

After your vasectomy, you rest in a recovery room until you’re ready to go home. You should spend two days after your procedure relaxing and resting. In most cases, an ice pack and acetaminophen can reduce any post-vasectomy swelling or discomfort. 

You and your partner should continue to use birth control until you have follow-up testing to confirm that there aren’t any sperm in your semen. You might have sperm in your vas deferens even after a vasectomy and may need to ejaculate several times before it’s gone. 

A vasectomy will not affect your libido, virility, or sexual performance. Many men find that not having to worry about pregnancy helps them feel more spontaneous and sexual, enhancing their experiences.
